Apiary Fantasies

Follow me on:

I like to imagine that I could turn our postage-stamp-size urban yard into a thriving garden. And you know what? I probably could. I'm not afraid of hard work, and the idea of planning out a high-producing garden in limited space? That kind of organization strikes me as an awfully fun way to spend a Friday night. I stop myself, though, because I've seen what my gardening efforts have led to in the past. I lose interest, things die, I feel bad. Instead, I take pleasure in our lemon tree, plant a few herbs, prune the rosemary bush, and call it a day.

So a thriving vegetable patch is out. I then thought about keeping a few chickens. My husband, who is usually sport for pretty much anything, begged me to let that dream die. So lately I've found my thoughts turning to bees. Bees! Easy, right? And everyone loves honey - at least a little. Plus, with all the bee colony collapse, it seems potentially altruistic to keep bees.

Then I read Beekeeping: A Practical Guide. I learned beekeeping is, in a way easy, but in another important way, quite a bit of work at various stages. I'm going to sleep on it. Maybe for another year.

Thinking of establishing an apiary to call your own? I cannot recommend the book highly enough.
