U-Pick Apple Orchards

Monday October 26, 2009

Who doesn't love the idea of picking your own apples? Fun at the farm, with the likely promise of cider doughnuts to boot! Daniel Gross points out the downsides of apple picking in this clever view on pick-your-own over at Slate. Do you ever pick your own apples? Do you love it? Do you use all the apples you take home? Do you buy other products, like apple butter, cider, or doughnuts?

Molly, we have been picking apples at a local orchard in Eugene, for over 33 years. We follow the farmer’s advice and pick apple for “eating right now.” Than, we pick apples for “keepers” and store them in our garage for months on end and use them for pies and sauces. By the end, we mix them with blueberries for the same purposes, but by that time, they are a bit soft. Always delicious. We pick a bushel.

Wow – the same orchard for 33 years is impressive! I can’t help but wonder what you store all those apples in? Do you have actual barrels? Crates? Bags?
