If you're lucky enough to find yourself in Portland, Oregon tomorrow or Saturday, be sure to check out the second annual Oregon Berry Festival taking place at the Ecotrust event spaces at NW 10th and Johnson.
Seriously, the best berries I've ever had have been in Oregon. At a friends' wedding in July in Oregon there was a dessert buffet featuring towering cakes, juicy pies, and other theoretically tempting delights, but everyone just honed in on the giant bowl of fresh berries. They were good in a way that almost made no sense. They made all other berries I've had before or since seem like shadow berries of those supreme berries. And no, I don't think I'm coating that taste memory with a layer of nostalgia. I think those berries really were that good.
I also have some fond memories of picking about a million pounds of wild blackberries at the Oregon Coast one summer. Yes, that's right. A million pounds. We made a cobbler and a crisp and then froze the rest and made smoothies all week long. It was glorious.
