There are still lovely figs at my market, but that feeling of panic, of knowing that they will disappear all too soon, is setting in. One way I like to keep fresh figs around a bit longer than they would otherwise last is to cook them in a spiced sugar syrup. The results can sit in the fridge for several weeks, just getting more soaked with syrup as they sit, ready to be spooned onto ice cream or eaten plain.
