With school well back in session, the whole subject of snacks seems everywhere - after school snacks, class snacks, group snacks, party snacks, snacks, snacks, snacks for children everywhere. Of course these snacks should be healthful, but one also wants the children to actually eat the snacks. Carrot sticks and crackers and dried fruit and nuts all gets a bit dull and dreary, even to me. So it was a real breath of fresh air when I saw Real Snacks: Make Your Favorite Childhood Treats Without All the Junk by Lara Ferroni. From classic graham crackers and cheese fish crackers to toaster tarts and snack cakes made with real ingredients and the goodness of home cooking, there are recipes for things even I'd never thought about cooking myself. The chocolate peanut ice cream cones were a huge hit at my house, and next up are moon pies. I'm also awfully glad there's a tip for making one's own "canoe" shape baking cups out of foil because I have my eye on the cream-filled yellow cakes....
