I've actually been other places since my trip to Montreal in early November, but I keep coming up with photos I forgot to share. This one - of lacinato kale growing as an ornamental plant in a small park in Old Montreal - is definitely one of my favorites. I wonder if any of you know if these plants get harvested and eaten? They look lovely, of course, adding plenty of lovely dark almost blue-ish green to the otherwise gray of a Montreal late fall, but they would also taste great. Braised with tomato and anchovy, sautéed with garlic and chiles, cooked into a bean and kale minestrone, or tossed into a simple salad.
