Christmas Dinner: Start With Soup

I love serving a soup course at holiday dinners. Since roasts or other substantial main dishes tend to follow, I lean towards the simple, the delicious, the vegetable-laden soups for such occasions. If they can be colorful too, that's a great bonus. For less formal gatherings, I make a big pot that my family and I can enjoy for lunch and then serve in cups and mugs to our guests as they arrive. This keeps people from getting too hungry (or, let's face it, too tipsy!) while dinner gets pulled together. It's also nice if you have any friends or family stopping by to exchange holiday wishes but not staying the the main meal. Try one of these slurpable treats to lay the groundwork for your feast:
