Guide to Everything About Apples

By , About.com Guide

Let's not even get into whether an apple a day keeps the doctor away or not. An apple a day is delicious, whether it's a tart and crunchy Granny Smith eaten out of hand or sweet and soft baked into a crust of some sort. Find varieties, storage tips, and u-picks here.

Apple Season

Apples are deeply associated with fall in the American imagination, as well they should be. Many apple varieties in many parts of the country, however, come into season in August (even late July some places). Apples are harvested into November in some areas, but in general apples are at their best in September and October. They keep well, though, so locally grown apples can often be found well into winter.

Cooking With Apples

Once cut, apples will turn brown fairly quickly. You can mitigate this by putting the slices in acidulated water (about 2 Tbsp. lemon juice or vinegar per quart of water).

My favorite way to use apples is to tuck them into an Old-Fashioned Apple Pie. Second favorite? Easy Apple Turnovers.

How to Store Apples

Apples are a storage crop and keep very well is stored in a cool, dark place. Loosely wrap apples in plastic and keep in the bottom crisper of the fridge and they'll last for weeks.

Find an Orchard Near You!

The site All About Apples lists over 2,000 apple orchards around the country (conveniently, they are listed by state). Most orchards even list the specific apple varieties they grow as well as other crops available for u-pick.
