Red, White, and Blue Desserts for July Fourth

By , About.com Guide

These desserts—red, white, blue—are perfect for July Fourth and they use seasonal ingredients that are available locally in much of the country come early July.

Red is easy. Red is strawberries and cherries and raspberries, which are in or coming into season in much of the country this time of year. Red is a beyond-easy Strawberry Fool or Raspberry Fool. Red is simply sweet Strawberry Ice Cream or an Easy Strawberry Sauce that makes just about anything red and delicious. Red is Raspberry Cornmeal Cobbler and Cherry Clafoutis and Strawberry Shortcake. Red is Sour Cherry Turnovers, if the sour cherry season hits just a tad early.

White is cream and whipped cream, vanilla ice cream and milk shakes. For a bit more flavor white is Buttermilk Ice Cream or Panna Cotta, or a simple Buttermilk Cake (topped with red and blue berries, of course).

The blue-est dessert I know is Blueberry and Jam Tart. Two close runners-up are Blueberry Ice Cream and Blueberry Sorbet.
