How to Install a Beehive

The first and very obvious step to installing a beehive is to obtain said hive. It sounds simple but there is one catch: you need a "starter hive." You will soon thereafter need a larger hive, but if you put a new colony in a regular-size hive they may not be able to keep it warm enough for all their honey-making and reproducing activities. So, sigh, begin with the starter hive.

These pictures are all from a real, live introduction of a package of bees into a San Francisco backyard that had previously been beehive-free. The family, who had a few fruit trees in their yard and had grown some vegetables in their garden for several years had decided to add one more ultra-local food to their diet: honey.

If you're new to beekeeping, having an experienced beekeeper show you the ropes first is a great way to learn the subtleties of beekeeping. A solid how-to book, like Beekeeping: A Practical Guide by Richard E. Bonney is also a must-have to answer questions and provide resources as you manage your hive.
