What Is Urban Agriculture?

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

Urban agriculture is a growing movement in the U.S. that seeks to decentralize the food system by creating small, local food producing centers in urban areas.

Urban agriculture refers to the practice of growing food of all sorts – fruits, vegetables, eggs, meat, honey, even space-using grains – in urban areas that haven't traditionally been dedicated to food production. Urban agriculture can take place in yards, vacant lots, community gardens, highway medians, and other open spaces.

What makes urban agriculture different from traditional gardening is both the addition of some kind of livestock – most commonly chickens, bees, or rabbits – as well as some level of selling, bartering, or otherwise providing food beyond the immediate household(s) or the grower(s).
