Warabi is often known as pohole on Maui and ho'i'o on the Big Island. No matter where you are, it is the unfurled fern fronds found in the wet, green tropical areas on the east sides of Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii. Warabi is not the same species as fiddlehead ferns on the mainland, but can be used in the same ways – sauteed or steamed – as well as tossed into salads.
